Live Mix Assistant is a free browser-based live sound analyzer built for working sound engineers, musicians, venues and anyone who wants a clearer picture of what is happening in a live mix. Using your phone or computer microphone, it can display a real-time frequency spectrum, watch for persistent resonances, monitor estimated sound pressure level, look for possible feedback buildup and help document room characteristics for future shows.

The goal is not to replace your ears or automatically mix the show. It is designed to give you another useful set of information at FOH so you can listen, measure, make a small adjustment and listen again.

How to Use Live Mix Assistant

Live Mix Assistant combines several tools on one page. The easiest way to use it is to start with Live Mix during the show, then use Room Calibration during setup when you have time to test the PA.

1. Live Mix

Tap LIVE MIX, then tap START LISTENING. Your browser will ask for permission to use the microphone. Tap Allow. Once listening begins, the spectrum, estimated SPL, Resonance Watch and Feedback Watch will analyze the sound reaching the device.

For the most useful reading, keep the phone near your normal listening position rather than laying it directly beside a loud speaker, subwoofer or stage monitor.

2. Estimated SPL, Peak and Running Average

The large SPL display is an estimated sound level based on the device microphone. Peak records the highest estimated level since listening began, while Running Avg gives you a general average for the current session.

Important: a phone microphone is not a certified SPL measurement system. Treat the reading as an estimate until you compare and calibrate it against a trusted SPL meter.

3. Real-Time Spectrum Analyzer

The Real-Time Spectrum displays frequency energy from approximately 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Lower frequencies are on the left and higher frequencies are on the right. The display is intentionally slowed and smoothed so it is easier to follow while mixing a band.

A tall peak does not automatically mean you should EQ that frequency. It could be a bass note, vocal note, cymbal, guitar harmonic, room mode or a real resonance. Use the graph to help confirm what you are already hearing.

4. Resonance Watch

Resonance Watch looks for narrow frequencies that remain stronger than nearby frequencies. It is designed to avoid reacting to every short musical note.

  • ✅ NO PROBLEM DETECTED — no persistent narrow frequency is currently being flagged.
  • 👀 WATCHING A POSSIBLE PEAK… — something is standing out, but it has not remained long enough to recommend an EQ move.
  • ⚠️ POSSIBLE RESONANCE DETECTED — the frequency has remained unusually strong long enough to investigate.

When a resonance is flagged, the app shows a suggested frequency, gain cut and Q. Treat those numbers as a starting point. Listen first, make a small move, then listen again.

5. Feedback Watch

Feedback Watch looks for a narrow frequency that is both persistent and increasing. That can be an early sign of a microphone or monitor beginning to ring. If it flags a frequency, first check open vocal microphones, wedge levels, monitor sends, microphone placement and stage volume.

Music itself can create narrow sustained tones, so never assume every warning is feedback. Confirm it by ear before making a notch.

6. SPL Meter & Calibration

Tap SPL METER for a dedicated view of the estimated current level, peak and running average. The calibration offset lets you line the app up more closely with a trusted meter.

Example: if your trusted SPL meter reads 96.0 dB and Live Mix Assistant reads 93.5 dB, increase the calibration offset by 2.5 dB, then tap SAVE CALIBRATION. The setting is stored in that browser on that device.

7. Create a Venue / Room Profile

Tap ROOM CALIBRATION and enter as much information as you know. Useful information includes:

  • Venue name and capacity
  • Room length, width and ceiling height
  • Room shape
  • Floor, wall and ceiling materials
  • General room character — dry, controlled, live or very reflective
  • Typical crowd level
  • Stage width, depth and height
  • FOH or measurement position
  • Known issues such as rear-wall slap, boomy corners or a hard reflective ceiling

8. Estimated Axial Room Modes

When you enter room dimensions, Live Mix Assistant estimates several basic axial room-mode frequencies. These are frequencies that can be reinforced by the room dimensions themselves, especially in the low end.

Room-mode calculations are clues, not automatic EQ instructions. If an estimated room mode lines up with something you also see during pink-noise testing and hear in the room, it becomes more useful information.

9. Pink Noise Room Calibration

Pink noise is generally more useful than white noise for basic sound-system and room checks because its energy distribution works well with octave-based audio analysis. Start the pink noise at a safe, moderate level.

Keep the PA level consistent while taking measurements. Do not turn pink noise up unnecessarily loud.

10. Multi-Position Measurement

A single FOH measurement cannot describe an entire room. For a better picture, capture several positions while the same pink-noise level is playing:

  1. FOH — your normal mix position.
  2. Front Left — representative audience position near the left side.
  3. Front Right — representative position near the right side.
  4. Rear / Middle — farther back in the listening area.

You can also use a custom label such as Balcony Center, Rear Bar or Dance Floor. Live Mix Assistant averages the captured positions so you are less likely to tune the entire PA for one unusual seat.

11. Understanding the Averaged Room Calibration

If the same frequency problem appears across several positions, it is more likely to be a system-wide or room-wide issue. If the problem appears only in one corner, it may be a local coverage or boundary problem that should not be corrected with a large system EQ change.

Use the averaged response for broad system decisions and the individual positions to help understand coverage differences.

12. Save and Reload Venue Profiles

When you finish a room check, tap SAVE THIS VENUE PROFILE. Saved profiles can contain the room details, measurement positions, averaged calibration information and detected resonance data. Tap SAVED VENUES later to reload a venue.

Profiles are stored locally in the browser on the device you used. Clearing browser data or using a different device can remove or hide those saved profiles.

Recommended Live Sound Workflow

  1. Enter the venue and basic room information during setup.
  2. Start Live Mix listening.
  3. Run pink noise at a safe level.
  4. Capture FOH and several audience positions.
  5. Review the averaged room response and room-mode estimates.
  6. Make only small system adjustments that you can also confirm by ear.
  7. Stop pink noise and save the venue profile.
  8. During the show, use the slow RTA, Resonance Watch, Feedback Watch and SPL meter as additional references.
Best practice: Listen → Measure → Make a small adjustment → Listen again. Live Mix Assistant is meant to support the engineer, not replace the engineer.

Is Live Mix Assistant free?

Yes. The browser-based Live Mix Assistant on Travel + Wildlife + Sound Gigs is free to use.

Will it work on an iPhone?

Yes, as long as the browser allows microphone access. When prompted, allow the site to use the microphone. The page must be loaded over HTTPS for browser microphone access.

Can it tell me exactly what frequency to cut?

It can identify a possible persistent resonance and suggest a starting frequency, gain cut and Q. The recommendation should always be confirmed by listening before you change the mixer EQ.

Is the SPL meter certified?

No. The built-in SPL reading is an estimate based on the device microphone. For compliance, hearing-safety documentation or professional system measurement, use properly calibrated measurement equipment.

Why use pink noise for room calibration?

Pink noise provides a useful broadband signal for checking frequency balance across a PA and room. It is commonly more practical for this purpose than white noise.

Does Resonance Watch automatically change my mixer?

No. Live Mix Assistant only provides information and suggested starting points. The sound engineer remains in control of every change.

Where are saved venue profiles stored?

They are stored locally in the browser on the device used to create them. They are not currently cloud-synced between devices.
