North Florida Drummers: Proven & Powerful Drum Mic Secrets from Nashville
North Florida Drummers in Lake City, Live Oak, and across North Florida — I recently attended an advanced live sound class in Nashville with some of the most respected FOH engineers in the world. These engineers have toured globally with major artists, and the drum mic techniques they shared can immediately improve your live drum sound.
North Florida Drummers: Start With the Right Microphones
One major lesson for North Florida Drummers is this: choose the right mic before touching EQ.
Set up different microphones on your kit with:
- No EQ
- No compression
- No gating
- No processing
Listen to the raw sound. The mic that naturally sounds best on your drum wins. Every drum kit is different, and every drummer hits differently.
You do not need matching brand mics. Mix and match until your kit sounds right and consistent at every gig.
North Florida Drummers: Overhead Placement and Phase Control
For North Florida Drummers using two overhead microphones, always measure from the center of the snare to each overhead. Both distances should match to prevent phase cancellation.
Position overheads above cymbals instead of underneath. This gives better control of cymbal wash and preserves a natural stereo image.

North Florida Drummers: Tom and Snare Mic Positioning
Tom Mics:
- Place about two fingers above the rim.
- Aim toward where the drummer strikes.
Snare Top:
- Three fingers above the head.
- Angle toward strike zone.
Snare Bottom:
- Centered underneath.
- Flip polarity on the mixer.

North Florida Drummers: Fix Tone at the Source
Another powerful takeaway for North Florida Drummers is to use microphone switches and built-in tone shaping before applying heavy EQ at the mixer.
When your drum tone is right at the source, the entire mix becomes easier and cleaner.
